We used to write to a mass anonymous audience, but on the web the tide has turned and we are writing for small niche market segments and interest groups or even writing for individual users/readers. Peachpit Press just published a pretty good article on the website on learning how to Peachpit: Web Design Reference Guide >write like a human rather than sounding like a corporation. I’m not sure that I agree with ALL of the article, but the major points the authors address are
- Listen before you talk
- Like a real conversation
- Getting rid of your own originality
- Knowing your audience as individuals rather than information consumers
- Know what consumers want from you
- Know what tasks they want to accomplish and why they are doing the task
- Recognize the scale and hierarchy of the test
- Develop a cast of personas that use your website with individual characteristics you can identify with
Can you guess which items I don’t exactly agree with?
Get rid of your originality?
