After newspapers disappearing at Arkansas State University (see prior post), it’s alarming to see that one in three high school students believe that the press should be more restricted. USA Today reports 36 percent of students believe that newspapers should get government approval of stories before publishing and 32 percent say the press enjoys too much freedom.
The results of this survey are truly frightening. The policymakers of the future don’t see any real purpose behind the first amendment. Hopefully, before they start making policy, they can be educated on the purpose and the history of the first amendment.
